The EIA Licensing Process

From project concept to NEMA license in 6 clear steps.

01

Screening & Scoping

We assess your project details to determine the level of study required (SPR or CPR) and define the scope of assessment.

02

Baseline Studies

Our experts collect data on the current state of the environment (air, water, soil, biodiversity, and social setting).

03

Stakeholder Engagement

We conduct public participation exercises, interviewing neighbors and relevant authorities to gather their views.

04

Impact Analysis

We identify potential positive and negative impacts and evaluate their significance using accepted methodologies.

05

EMP Development

Creating an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) outlining mitigation measures, monitoring protocols, and responsibilities.

06

Reporting & Approval

Submission of the final EIA report to NEMA, following up through the review process until the license is issued.

Common Questions

What is the difference between an EIA and an Environmental Audit?

An EIA is done BEFORE a project starts to predict impacts. An Environmental Audit is done annually AFTER the project is operational to check compliance.

How much does an EIA cost?

Costs vary based on project scale (0.1% of project cost is payable to NEMA as processing fee) and the complexity of the study required.

Why do I need a NEMA license?

It is a legal requirement under the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) 1999. Operating without one attracts heavy fines and project stoppage.

What is Public Participation?

It involves consulting people likely to be affected by the project. NEMA requires proof of this consultation (minutes, questionnaires) for approval.
